Cafe Jazz, Cardiff
Feb 14
After the stadium rock euphoria of The Thekla could we produce the smooth jazz appropriate for a cold night in Cardiff? Hmmm, Valentines Day. Maybe a set of smoochy ballads. All is Yes.
We started with our arrangement of “I Fall in Love Too Easily”. It sounded like Cake Hole. Next we played a tear-inducing version of “All or Nothing at All” (Suki Suzuki). We finished the first set with “You Don’t Know What Love Is” (Can’t Believe in Faith). The audience remained for the second set. In fact they seemed so moved by our heart-felt renditions that they started reproducing in front of us. Maybe just more people turned up after romantic, candle-lit meals with loved ones.
Second set even better. Jim actually managed to make the audience laugh. We did some special Valentine’s Day free improvisation and bleached their love cakes. A delicately moving and raucous end to a subtly brash tour.
